RE: [RC] ground control shoes - Sharon Levasseur

Ah yes, Heidi has refreshed my memory... we also used a toe nail, and we also re-clinched often. I bought my own set so I could do it myself as needed.

Also, a friend of mine tried these shoes, and they walked themselves sideways off the hooves within a week. Same farrier as mine, so same installation method, just on a different horse. I think horses with some particular "ways of going" (even if they're trotters) just can't wear them.

I have only ever been able to reset a pair or two (early in the season, not riding as much as I'd like) my farrier does put in a toe nail, no special things, maybe a clinching a week or so in. I started this season in steel due to so much mud and knowing I wouldn't get to ride much (very rainy and I'm a fair weather rider) but my horse goes better in the GC. Shelly type feet don't work as well in them as the hoof tends to flare a bit due to the shoe giving during concussion. I keep them on all season and he goes barefoot for about 3+ months from Nov. through February.

Do you find you have to do anything
special to keep them on that you do not
have to do to "regular" steel shoes? Are you able to reset
them after 6
weeks of hard riding?

I've used these shoes on the front for about 4 seasons now and LOVE them! Have had no rock issues at all, I ride on gravel roads mostly. Have only lost one shoe (at a ride) but had a spare in my cantle bag and was pushing the amt. of time between shoeings!  I usually go 6 weeks with hard riding.
