I don't know about your horse, but I can't imagine any of my horses facing a charging lion and not doing a 180 and running at top speed.  The rider may end up injured on the ground, not a good thing.
 
Can a horse outrun a Lion?  The answer depends upon the lead the horse has.  5 yards is probably not enough.  Is 15 enough?  50 is surely enough.  Wolves and their kin run down prey, pursuing for miles if needed.  Cats jump from ambush.  A completely different hunting style.
