[RC] re: 5 day work week - Cindy Collins

I haven't followed this thread much, but I would agree with these basic distances for explaining my training. If I get to ride once a week during weekdays and once over the weekend, I'm pretty happy. Here in Wyoming the weather has way more to do with when I can condition, or not. Mostly spring training is hit or miss. The first 50 miler is usually a big part of my training.

This schedule has worked fine for me for over 28 years. My mare just completed her first 50 miler last weekend. The farthest she'd ever been was just about 20 miles. Mostly she did a 5-8 mile training ride during the week and a 12-15 mile ride on weekends for about six to eight weeks before this ride. That's it. We did mix in hills with flat. She never did any LD. She had fantastic recoveries all day. She came in below criteria at every vet check and was checked immediately at the finish line and was 52. We just went slowly at the back of the pack, but she definitely could have gone faster.

"I find it interesting as to what people consider "short" and "long" distances. To me, a short ride is 5 - 7 miles. A medium ride is 10 - 12 miles, and a long ride is 15 miles and up."
