Steroids were banned starting Oct 2008. In the Breeder's Cup the European horses cleaned up. Curlin who won the Breeder's Cup Classic in 2007 was the odds on favorite - he didn't even finish in the money with the first two spots going to European. When asked why the Europeans did so well - a commentator from Great Briton stated  that Steroids were no longer used in the US.

Interesting.  I had no idea that steroids were "ok" before now.  I knew there's been a history of using steroids in TB's, Secretariat was supposedly on steroids for quite a long time.
 
At least this is a little bit of a change in the right direction.
