RE: [RC] since we're on the subject... - following / leading - Rae Callaway

An alpha can still be trained. Ask anyone, Scarlet is a Queen B and is
definitely the ruler around here.

well, I think I am stuck with an alpha. Even when we were regularly
riding in groups, she would still throw a tizzy. She isn't hot, only
when she wants to be in front. What I am asking is I have always
waited until camp was empty to start, but she still knew there were
horses up there leading to a sore back for me and 25 miles of
pulling. Is this a mare I should start in the front? Or keep on
starting from the back.
Tiffany-this is a much beloved mare, and is perfect in every other
way. Vicky and I used to ride in a group all the time, but our two
(same sire) had to be in front even competing amongst themselves. I
have another mare that I also trained who could care less where she
gets placed.

Best thing I've found for teaching a "hot" horse to ride nicely in

is to ride in groups.

That's the best advice I've ever read and it absolutely correlates
with my experience. My hot fast-walking horse can now walk as
slowly as the slowest dude string horse. He can lead the group.
He can tag along at the end. It took four years and he's still
anxious at the start of a competitive ride, but he's no longer
embarrassing.
