RE: [RC] newbie at eagle ranch - Kristen A Fisher

We did this ride in 2007 and really loved it. The camp area couldn't be
better - a great covered area for ride meetings, great bathrooms with plenty
of toilets, showers, and hot water. The ranch owners will bring you ice,
firewood, etc and are just wonderful [and will even muck your trailer!]. And
yes the horse stalls are great.

We didn't have any problems with the trails markings - they are relatively
easy to follow if you pay attention. 2 things that did catch up by surprise:
I think the ride materials said "shoes recommended" and coming from TX we
felt like we not only needed shoes but wished we had padded as well. As it
turns out Distance Depot was there [fabulous vendor] and she got us all set
up with extra Easy Boots and glue so we glued on boots and did fine. There
were 3 loops for the 50 - 17, 16, and 17 miles each with a 50 min hold
between them. I am not sure what the LD loops were.

The other surprise was the way the VC was handled [all VCs were in camp
BTW]. There was no pulse in; the vet pulsed you in and you had to be
unsaddled. So that meant you came in, untacked, and stood in the vet line to
pulse in and then have your vet exam. So if you use a HRM on your saddle,
you may want to plan to bring a stethoscope or hand held to track your
horse's pulse rate while untacked. If you weren't at criteria when you saw
the vet, you had to go to the back of the line - and your time was still
running. If there was a line at the VC, you had to wait until the horses
ahead of you pulsed in and then ALSO had their full VC, vs. just waiting for
the horses ahead to pulse down.

All that being said, the head vet was not Leon Self when we went so he may
have a totally different way of running things - but it would be good to
ask.

You'll have fun - good luck!

Subject: [RC] newbie at eagle ranch

Hi,
I will be doing my first (yeah!) LD at Eagle Ranch in April.
Can someone (private is fine) please give me info on what to
expect as far as the trail terrain, way the loops and vet
checks are set up? I am so excited, any info will be hugely
appreciated!
