Re: [RC] FITS 100 60 miles - Steph Teeter

well I really don't know - but since you asked.. :)

My theories:
1. they have tightened up the rules to protect horses in places like UAE where 'to finish is to win' is not paramount
2. they really don't care if they lose most of 'grass roots' riders because most of their revenue comes from rides with significant prize money, regardless of the number of participants.
3. they want the sport to be more exclusive, and less inclusive, which is more typical of the other top level FEI sports.

... ?

Why did FEI do this, it seems they have shot themselves in the foot.

That wasn't so bad... But this new qualification system requires horses to do a 50 mile ride, then a 75 mile ride, and then a 100 mile ride - and all of them have to be FEI sanctioned. And given the fact that there are only a dozen or so FEI events in the country, that means that even to complete the basic 50 and 75 mile events, you have to travel to an FEI sanctioned ride (and btw ride the exact same AERC ride as everybody else, but pay at least $100 more in entry fees).

Our country, and every other country with a very strong national endurance program has to convince FEI that national rides should count towards the qualification of horses to compete at the FEI level.
