When I had a tank water stop on a Midwest ride, I provided a diping bucket, several drink buckets, and encouraged everyone to leave their own bucket there.

In camp in the Midwest, it is common practice to privide diping buckets at the water source and insist that they are used. Don't know if it helps, as all the horses drink from puddles on the trail, I am just reporting the common practice.
