These units are "sealed combustion" . That is,
a fan draws outside air into a chamber, that does not in any way share air with
the inside of the unit, burns LP gas, and exhausts the fumes outside of the
unit. They have multiple safeguards to make sure explosions and fire do
not happen. The fire is not actually inside the unit, so it is not a CO
threat. The installation of a CO detector would be the final, redundant,
backup, safety measure.
The downside is that they require 12v DC to run the
fans. This requires the installation and proper maintenance of
batteries. Battery systems are another topic. There used to be units
that did not require fans, but these are no longer available.
