Hi Kimberly - I'm forwarding this to Ridecamp, you'll get some response I think. You can follow the discussion at http:// www.endurance.net/Ridecamp - and you can join the list if you want.

Hi.

My daughter's horse is having a problem swallowing water. It does not regurgitate, or have anything coming out of it's nose, it simply trys to drink the water and it comes back out of it's mouth. She said it doesn't seem to be going down the throat at all, but she isn't sure.

Below, I have quoted a segment from your website, which made me think you can get my question to someone that can help. Will you forward my daughter's horse's problem to Dr. Q and see if Dr. Q can suggest some possible diagnosis and/or suggest things we can try to get the problem narrowed down? --The horse also has an itchy spot on it's hind, and has itched some of the hair off. ... not sure if that could be related.

Thank you for getting this question to someone that may be able to help.

I appreciate your time and consideration.

"RC] Horse can't swallow - Bruce Weary DCHi Laura--
The symptoms you are describing are very possibly coming from what is called an upper motor neuron lesion, a cranial nerve defect, or brain/spinal cord pathology that is causing any combination of these. An MRI would be very helpful in diagnosing the problem. There may be some rare and remote infections that could cause those problems, but "when you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras." The reason the food is coming back out through her nose is the swallowing mechanism has been compromised, possibly from paralysis, soft palate defect, or other mechanism that is supposed to keep food moving the right direction. Good luck to your friend and her horse. Dr Q"
