[RC] Big horses in endurance - Lynn WhiteAngie,
That is nice to know that big muscled horses that have some fat on them are
less likely to tie up at a ride. Do you know why?
My little "Classified Add Special" grade mare is well muscled in her rear end
and I've always had a heck of time getting that extra winter weight off her.
She's an air fern and could probably survive on straw. She looks perpetually
pregnant and at least once a year someone asks me when her foal is due. She's
never tied up, and I've always wondered why. Perhaps it's just the way horses
metabolize fat. I don't know.
One thing I don't do with my mare is feed her grain. She gets a little
Strategy and perhaps some carrots around a "race" but that's about it. Alfalfa
makes her crazy so I avoid that too. She's a real go getter though: Thinks
she ought to be up there with the front runners and once and while I'll get a
wild hair and let her go, which I always regret. She does run out of steam if I
let her go too fast, but can go day after day if we keep a sensible pace.
Lynn
