I don't think so. An event maybe - competition, no. The essence of a competition is that there is a winner and at least one other competitor. After all, in a competition, you compete and you can't compete if there is no one to compete against. While it is true that one can compete against oneself, say to better a previous performance, such a "competition" is strictly mental and the various stewards of our national lands haven't got the technology to get into our minds...yet. Alternatively, you can compete against the trail. But here the word is a metaphor since the trail isn't really competing at all. It is just there.


A better analogy than comparing a miles-only ride to an Endurance ride or an LD ride would be to compare it to a group of hikers who track their mileage from point to point and how long it took them to traverse those distances.
