Re: [RC] Carcass Removal - kathy swigart/Carrie - Lynn Kinsky

It's considered a public health issue and safety of the streams and ground water issue. In Santa Barbara all dead animals are supposed to wind up at the sealed landfill (http://www.countyofsb.org/pwd/RRWMD/facility_tajiguas.htm). Undoubtedly ranches with a lot of land and no prying neighbors can bury or just let dead stock be taken care of by nature -- but that's not an option on a smaller parcel (yes, I've buried dead pets in my rose garden -- hate to waste fertilizer -- but once you need a backhoe, the burial becomes a bit more public). -- lk

Actually, I'm not sure how the legal part of it plays in. Would you
have to get a permit to bury a horse? I buried my cat in my backyard.
Did I commit a crime then? YIKES!!
I don't really think there's a whole lot to worry about regarding
legalities of burying a pet (even a horse) on larger parcels of private
property. Really! Who's gonna know? <wink> I know lots of people who
have done it (including the stables I board at) and lightening didn't
strike, nor did the law show up.
We also did this many times at the 300 acre sanctuary I used to work at.
Somehow, I have a hard time picturing the "law" coming around to the
millions of acres of private horse properties in CA with a giant stick,
poking around trying to find carcasses underground. Lol

worth it to provide my horse a happy, peaceful ending.

If you live in the State of California (which I believe Carrie does),
finding a
friend with some property and burying the horse is not a legal option.?
You
HAVE to have somebody come with a truck and haul off the carcass.

And I am assuming that what we are talking about here are legal options
open to
horse owners.? In fact, I thought that that was the purpose of the
discussion.?
I can do whatever I want if I don't care about legality.? Unless, of
course, I
were to fall into that category of people who only care about legality
to the
extent that I might get caught.

Personally, I don't.
