Re: [RC] Clipping the endurance horse - Elizabeth Walker

I'm in San Diego, so temps rarely get much below 35-40 where I am. Right now, Caisson's winter coat is almost all in, and its 86 degrees. I'm planning on doing a trace clip this weekend, as it seems like a pretty good compromise. It lets me work him even when its fairly warm, helps with cleanup and cooling out, but he still has enough coat that he only needs to be blanketed at night, or during stormy/windy weather.

Since I don't get off work until 5 PM, it is dark by the time I get out to the ranch. With a full coat, I can't really do much as far as working him - even lunging - since it takes too long for him to cool down and dry out afterwards. A trace clip lets me at least lunge during the week, and he cools down/dries off enough for me to then blanket for the night.

Howdy,
When I lived in Michigan, I often clipped my wooly mammoth mules for winter. Usually a trace clip that I would redo to a hunter clip in the spring. I did blanket though & they did live outside.
This is my second winter in Wyoming & my mules still live outside & I still ride quite a bit in winter. Here the weather is more arid, very little humidity. So, to me 15 degrees here is much warmer than 15 degrees in MI (unless that wind is blowing-but that's another story). Long story, short--I don't clip at all here. They will sweat, so after a ride & some cool out time, I put a rainsheet on them before turning them out, only IF they are still damp. They don't wear this all the time, I consider it wind protection when they are damp from sweating. So they don't chill.
