RE: [RC] Hoof Wizard...What do you guys think?? - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLF

You're right, you did say "farriers." Personally, I wouldn't use a farrier
that didn't use a hoof gauge or SOME measurement device. Some trimmers have a
really good eye for angles, but since a fraction of an inch can make a
difference, I'd rather have him use whatever gadgets he needs to get the
correct angles. But I agree with you on the Hoof Wizard in that it may lend
itself to a high margin for error. However, I've never seen anyone use one of
these. Maybe that alone speaks for itself. ;)

Well .. I said "farriers", not "specialists". I live in Lakeside,
CA ... the redneck capital of - well, if not the world, at least
Southern California. It is just the impression I have -- there are
farriers that don't even use a hoof gauge, let alone something like
the "hoof wizard". Specialists are a different sort of animal. When
you consult a specialist, you generally a) expect to pay more, and b)
expect them to use different techniques (including x-rays, etc.).

Regardless of that - I still am not convinced that this thing is
foolproof enough. It looks as if it would be really easy to attach it
at a slant, which would not be a good thing for the horse.

The specialist I hired for my mare's feet drew lines on her hoofs.
I thought it was a good idea and he's far from being an amateur.
But then he also had my EponaTech images to use as reference points
so he could get the best angles in relation to her bones.

Well, my first impression after watching a couple of the videos, is
that this thing is just as prone to mistakes as anything else. It
depends on positioning the plastic guide pretty exactly ... they say
in the video that "a fraction of an inch" is critical. OK .... the
thing is positioned by hand and eye, and I really didn't see
anything that made a really good guide for positioning it.

You still have to eyeball the line you draw on the hoof with the
actual bottom of the hoof, and I DON'T think that line is where you
want to trim the hoof to - unless your horse grows a lot of hoof.

$119 for a piece of plastic, a white grease pencil and an
instructional video seems kind of pricey.

I also think that most farriers would not be open to using such a
thing -- regardless of whether it works or not, I would bet that the
reaction would be along the lines of "You have to be kidding -
drawing lines on the hoof would make me look like an amateur to my
customers". Some will use a hoof angle measure, but something where
they draw lines? I don't think so. That is not a point for folks
that do their own trimming, but I don't think that is the majority
of horse owners.

I got this e-mail about this product called the 'Hoof Wizard' the

I don't know it just seems so oversimplified....
