Borium, which is brazing alloy with chunks of carbide for traction, comes in many grip sizes.  Many farriers only have the really large size, because that is what the arena jumpers want.  When I have sharp shod for ice, I had the farrier put toe, and heel dots of really fine.  He needed a weeks notice so he could order fine grade.  Worked great.  Gave traction on ice, and concrete pavement with no problems.  Same thing would work on rock.
