I have two horses.  I roach one's mane.  I leave a little length on it so it looks more more like a mohawk.  That helps with spooks and mounting.  Right now, he has a forelock, but I'm tempted to hack that off too. 
 
I'd roach the other horse's mane, but he'd look like a llama.

Roaching the mane would certainly eliminate the rein-tangling problem, but without a thick mane, what would a rider hang onto in a panic situation?  :-))  I've been saved a few times by grabbing a mane.
