RE: [RC] [RC] Shavings in the Trailer/Peeing - Chastain, Shannon L.I got an older mare 4 years ago and she was in terrible shape, very thin, terrible feet and her urine had NO odor of any kind so does this mean she was not getting any protein? After I had her for about 6 months her urine did get somewhat smelly but never did get as bad as my gelding. Shannon Yep if you feed too much protein, the digestive system rips off the amine radical and eliminates it through the urine. That forms the ammonia. I have not ammonia smell in my trailer or my barn. As far as shaving in the trailer, I use the "large" shavings - the local tack stores has two sizes. The small are like sawdust and would blow around in the trailer. The large don't have that problem.
