Re: [RC] [RC] Internet dialog - Steph Teeter

wow, great phrase - but I had to look up the definition of harridan :)

harridan: A woman regarded as scolding and vicious. (can a guy be a harridan too?)

I've observed a bit of 'scolding' on Ridecamp, but I honestly don't think I've ever seen anything vicious. Maybe outraged or over- emotional or holier-than-thou, but not vicious. One of the things I like about the sport of Endurance in general is that the fact that it is demanding and difficult and is very humbling - and this in itself seems to weed out the nasty people.

We've been doing Ridecamp for almost 14 years!!! and in that time we've seen it all :) But for the most part it's a very decent group - opinionated (yes) - but generally quite considerate and civil. I think some of the perception of 'meanness' is simply due to absence of the other communication nuances such as body language, tone of voice, etc.

We used to try to moderate the list a little more - stepping in to calm things down, but sometimes that just makes it worse, and it's really better in the long run to let things run their course, and let the list 'self police'.

It's an amazing collection of personality and experience and knowlege - there's a lot more to be thankful for than there is to complain about -

I call baloney.

Criticism is a foundation for free thought, free speech, and is
necessary for people to grow outside their own realm of

Part of criticism is sometimes saying things that others view as "not
nice", and having such things said to you.

Part of the qualities of tolerance and self-esteem lie in being
personally strong enough to listen to others opinions (regardless of
how they are worded) without taking offense, and to truly evaluate the
opposing position without prejudice.

All that said, it's also wise to choose your battles, lest you become
viewed only as a nitpicking harridan.
