RE: [RC] [RC] [RC] Internet dialog - heidi

Ah, Soli, a voice of reason!

All too often, people with considerable background and no-nonsense ways of posting are labeled as "mean" when in fact, all they do is post opinions well-backed by facts.  Too many people take such responses as personal affronts or "attacks" when in all reality, they are attempts to educate.  Way too many very helpful and very well-versed people have left this list altogether because of the repeated venomous responses from "wronged" people screeching about "rights to their opinions" when in fact, they leave no room for the "rights" to the "opinions" of people who know a whole lot about the subjects about which they post.

Think about it.  If you ask about wrapping legs, do you want the "opinions" of people who have been to a couple of rides, or the "opinions" of people with thousands of successful miles and decades of experience?  Does it really matter how diplomatic they are?  Is the "sweetness" of their replies how you rank their answers?  I hope not.

As for some of the hot political agendas that keep cropping up on the list, yes, some of us lose patience with them.  This isn't the place for them.  And isn't it funny how the original pot-stirrers of such issues are so often the ones who turn around and label anyone who disagrees as "mean."  Well, sorry, but I personally think it is really "mean" to attack segments of our population who are not on this list to defend themselves, suggesting that they ruin the environment, that they usurp the public lands, etc.  If it is perceived as "mean" to call a spade a spade and to defend a group so maligned, then so be it.

Heidi

I call baloney.

Criticism is a foundation for free thought, free speech, and is
necessary for people to grow outside their own realm of
influence/experience.

Part of criticism is sometimes saying things that others view as "not
nice", and having such things said to you.

Part of the qualities of tolerance and self-esteem lie in being
personally strong enough to listen to others opinions (regardless of
how they are worded) without taking offense, and to truly evaluate the
opposing position without prejudice.

All that said, it's also wise to choose your battles, lest you become
viewed only as a nitpicking harridan.
