Crockett had a spray can of white paint (which was water soluble) . he would spray little puffs/drops of white on things to mark the way. Ends of pine tree branches with white tips, just eye high so you'd see them:) I do recall being on my hands in the rocks bending to taste the white spot to see if it was a trail marking -- it was not:(
