Re: [RC] [RC] Outlaw Trail 1998--nostalgiac moment - Barbara McCrary

We almost did (get lost) on the 1989 OT. Wanda Meyers and I were riding together, and thank goodness she had done it once before. We dropped off the slick rock on the Mail Trail down into the Escalante River. In late September it was little more than a creek. We got to the bottom and there was no flagging to show us whether we were to ride upstream or downstream. We were supposed to finish in the town of Escalante, so if we had had a map, we would have been able to read this and tell which direction to go. We did not, and of course I had never been there before in my life. Wanda said she "thought" she remembered going upstream, so upstream we rode. The canyon was very narrow, perhaps as little as 10-15 feet wide in one place, with sheer red rock walls several hundred feet high on either side. The only way to get through was ride in the stream. I was so relieved when we came out of the canyon right into the town that I hadn't been relaxed enough to properly enjoy the incredible beauty and experience of riding in such a deep, narrow slot in the earth.

We backpacked the Grand Staircase-Escalante area when we lived in Denver in the 80's and it is a unique place. We were staying in Torrey, Utah, about 7 miles from the start of the OT in '96 for about two months. That part of world is absolutely breathtaking. We were keeping the horses right across the road from Capitol Reef NP and rode all through the "reefs" - amazing stark beauty.

You don't need an endurance ride to go ride it - just don't get lost ;-) .
