Thank you, Sheila, this is great advice.  I think we can all learn from horses, that race in large metro areas (LA, Santa Anita, Hollywood Park) that get pharyngitis from heavy pollution (which is no where near the degree of damage that smoke inhalation produces).  It is a 6-8 week recovery period.  And often they do not recover in that time.   Many owners choose to never send the horses back to the track after they get pharyngitis. Especially on the east coast where the humidity plays a predominant role in exacerbating issue.
