RE: [RC] [RC] Rider weight vs horse size - heidi

Carrie, if your mare has the substance to be in proportion to her weight, she should be just fine packing your weight.

Check out Susan Garlinghouse's Tevis study sometime.  She tracked data for two years at Tevis, and found no correlation between the ratio of horse to rider weight and pull rates, despite the fact that there were riders in her study who tacked in at over 30% of their horse's weight.

Where she DID see a correlation to an increase in pull rates was when TOTAL combined horse and rider weight exceeded 1200 lbs.  Didn't matter if it was a 900 lb horse packing a 300 lb rider or an 1100 lb horse packing a 100# rider--if the TOTAL exceeded 1200 lbs, the lameness pulls began to increase.

Your mare is not even packing a quarter of her body weight--she should be just fine.

Heidi

Ok, here's a new topic I'd like to gather opinions on . . .
My mare is 14.2 hh and weighs about 880 to 900 lbs or so. Personal body weight plus gear and pack weight is probably about 185 total. Even if my mare is conditioned properly, do you think this is too much weight for her to do a 50? Or am I just a softy and worrying too much about her carrying said weight? Lol
Just curious.
