I have managed rides and I know where the costs are.  Many are fixed 
costs irrespective of the number of entries and the distances ridden; 
some are not.

As I just explained in another post, the issue is that not everyone is 
receiving the same "product" from the ride.  A 50 mile rider gets to 
ride twice as many miles as a 25 mile rider, which also means more hours 
on the trail.  It makes no sense to me that the rider getting half the 
"product" should pay the same price.

What this means is, if the LD and 50-mile riders are paying the same (or 
nearly the same) entry fee, the LD riders are subsidizing the 50-mile 
riders.  They are paying more than their fair share.

Now, the ratio doesn't have to be 2:1.  There are some things that the 
riders of all distance receive equally. So about 3:2 for 50/LD is 
probably about right.

As to what the fees need to be, the ride manager needs to estimate his 
costs, then estimate how many riders he will have at each distance, and 
come up with a fee structure that will recover his costs while still 
being fair to the riders.
