Re: [RC] Rider weight vs horse size - Nancy Sturm

My mare is 14.2 hh and weighs about 880 to 900 lbs or so. Personal body weight plus gear and pack weight is probably about 185 total. Even if my mare is conditioned properly, do you think this is too much weight for her to do a 50?

And I have a question along the same lines. I remember Truman writing that the same horse over the same terrain had vastly better recoveries with his petite wife up than the horse had with the lean (but not 105 lb) Truman up.

I have managed to drop 25 lbs and have about 10 lbs to go. I'm not sure I see any change in either of my horses. The primary horse is a 14.3 TWH, maybe weighs 800 - 900 dripping wet. The second is a 13.3 Icelandic mare - no clue what she weighs, but appropriate weight for a pony that size.

Would you expect a horse to have better recoveries carrying 25 - 35 lbs less?

Nancy
