[RC] 10-year team awards - Lynn WhiteWhen I first heard about this award I decided that it was the goal for me. I
rarely "race," my mare is a classified add special, and my outfit will soon
classify for "classic" plates. I basically do endurance on a shoestring. Some
seasons I might manage to get in 250 miles, while other seasons I get in only
100. I have a full time job and a non-horsey spouse. The only time I ever buy
anything new is when I can't find it second hand. I budget for rides and set my
calendar for five rides and I'm lucky if I can manage to get to three. I'm not
complaining really. I don't HAVE to do any of this. Endurance fun and
challenging for me. The 10-year award is an effort because I've decided to
acheive this goal. Ten years from now nobody is likely to know that I made
"the list" or even care for that matter. But I will. It's a high bar for me
and one I think Agnes and I can achieve. If something happened to Agnes I'd
just say, "oh well, this is a horse sport
and I did give it my best shot." I'd be a little miffed if I worked this hard
only to find that the bar was lowered.
Awards are for achieving outstanding goals. Awards are not given so that
everyone "feels like a winner." AERC already has an award for that: It's
called finishing.
If someone wants to sponsor a 10-year goal for LD's, or a ten-year award for a
horse, there is nothing to stop them. I'd just like to say, thanks Karen
Chatton, for giving me a challenging goal that I am pretty sure Agnes and I can
acheive.
