Re: [RC] [RC] HELP!: home made bug spray - Jen Simons

It's not the flies, it's the darn mosquitoes here in Manitoba. And the deer flies!

I've found the water based fly sprays are cheaper, but don't last long enough! I like the oil based ones.

Years ago, working at a trail ride barn in lake country, they use to buy a 20 L pail of canola oil, and mix in one of those small pails (1/2 L?) of pine tar. Then we painted stripes on with a paint brush on the feet, legs, chest and belly and near the face. Worked VERY well in our EXTREMELY buggy area. However, you had funny brown striped horses. In a pinch, I would put a bit on myself... you can get desperate in those bugs!

I think I would prefer to go the EO route, now!

I have also heard many people say that plain old organic Apple Cider Vinegar and water (50/50) works great and to put about 1/2 cup in the feed as well and the flies seem to steer clear.

We use all of the oils on our horses here in Egypt. We've had good effects with Geranium, Tea Tree, and Lavender mixed with water and vinegar. We wipe it on or spray it. Citronella can be very drying. We have found that the Eucalyptus seems to work better with the donkeys than the horses. For some reason, maybe a combination between the smell of donkeys and the herbs, adding lemon eucalyptus is good for humans and donkeys.

In terms of oils, we've found that almond oil is good on horses and seems to bother the bugs on it's own, though it is a bit expensive. I've used olive oil on the horses with no ill effects, and we are currently making our own (not essential) lavender oil by running lavender plants through the blender with sunflower oil and then sitting it in the sun for a couple of months. I have about 6 litres brewing on the barbecue right now.

Hoping for some help here!

I was wanting to make some home-made bug spray for horses. I have made a version for myself and it worked great! But I'm not sure if all the Essential Oils are safe for use on horses. Do you know if any of the following EO's are NOT safe for horses???

* Tea Tree
* Citronella
* Lemongrass
* Eucalyptus
* Rosemary
* Lavender

I was planning to mix with an oil (harder to wash it off their legs when going through wet grass). I have heard that olive oil is not good for dog's skin, is it the same for horses? I will probably use either sunflower or soybean oil (lighter in feel than canola).

Anyone see any problems with these ingredients?

Thanks for your help!
Jen
