RE: [RC] Hay prices - Ginger Bill

Something else about that Hat Creek Ride, Karen. My husband just rides the 10 mile fun ride and they are charging $55 for THAT! I mean, let's get real around here. We will just meet up with friends and horsecamp that weekend and choose another ride later in the season. Like I said, we are close enough that we can ride that country anytime, and do. I'm just sooooooo upset over the price gouging for everything to include our sport. Thank you for agreeing with me.  Ginger

Boy do I agree with you about Hat Creek!  I guess I shouldn’t go L  I wish they wouldn’t have dinner or completion awards and pass the savings on to us!

Boy, Lucy, do I ever hear you. I love that Hat Creek Ride(near Redding CA) and was I ever looking forward to participating in it. Rob Lydon even made it a two day event, but between the high cost of the ride, gas and hay I've decided to for go it this year and it's only an hour away from me. I have no control over the price of gas or hay, but I darn sure won't attend rides that keep increasing entry fees. I've heard all sorts of excuses as to why the fees are being driven up, but I don't buy into it as I was a Ride Manager myself for several years. Most everything you need is driven by the number of horses that are entered into the event, at least all the BLM, Forest Service, Drug and AERC) You can even put a small port-a-pottie in a horse trailer and that will suffice for santi-huts. Strictly no frills will save a lot of hardship on management and with the increase of everything else, why don't we try and take care of our own rather than just going with the flow. The buck needs to stop somewhere. Ginger

Funnily enough, I was just doing my monthly phone-
around to find out which feed stores have got what
by way of hay. This is for the Auburn, CA area:

Feed Store #1:
Orchard Grass - $16.50 (105 lbs)
Rye grass - $16.00 (115 lbs)
3-grain - $14.50 (110 lbs)
oat - $16.00 (125 lbs)

Feed Store #2:
Orchard/Pasture grass - $14.50
Timothy - $17.50
90/10 grass/alfalfa - $17.00
3-grain - $14.50 (108-1150 lbs)
Oat - $13.50

I'm feeding 8 horses right now - all on dry lots, so this is
their only food supply - and golly do those porkers eat a
lot... It definitely narrowed my budget for going to Rides
this year <sniff>.
