Re: [RC] Bears on the trail - Truman Prevatt

Crocodiles are aggressive. Alligators are not. They might eat a dog if it is swimming in their soup bowl - but adults aren't of any risk. I remember when I first moved to FL I saw people standing waist deep in water fishing with gators around them. Gators will "float" with just the snout and eyes out of the water. These guys had gators floating around them that had a 3 foot span between the eyes and the snout.

I asked a local - what gives with that assuming the gator might see an opportunity for a bite. He told me no problem - probably should be out of the water by dark but otherwise gators will not attack something the size of a human with they have all the other stuff to eat. Gators seem to be territorial toward other gators but not toward humans. Crocks are territorial toward everything.

I remember one ride in South FL where we pull up to a large pond and the horses put their heads down to get a drink. I spotted gator eyes about 50 feet out. He swam over to about 15 feet and looked for a few seconds and turned and swam off. I've crossed water near where gators were sunning themselves - no problem. Gators are the least of your worries in the woods or swamp.

There are a couple of exceptions:
1. Griz and Polar bear are apparently very certain that they are on the top of the food chain and need little encouragement to assert that right. (8 ft alligators and Nile crocks may also be in this category)
2. When sufficient time has passed under complete protection. An example is the news stories of Cougar attacks in CA, here in the Bitterroot few have ever seen them, the difference is here the population is managed by hunting.

My bottom line: Not only to people have to learn not to encourage attacks by animals, we also need to train them that they should stay away.
