Re: [RC] [RC] Just breeding (was Breeding Hybrids) - k s swigart

From: <Trailrite@xxxxxxx>

Kat, your good a breaking down costs....how
much would it take to produces a horse like
that above? Start with the mare costs, go to
breeding costs of lets say $700.00.....

The same as it costs to keep any horse. There is no profit in owning
horses; owning horses costs money and people do it as a hobby. Breeders
are horse owners too.

It is beyond me why breeders think that they should make money owning
horses when nobody else who owns horses does.

Except for very rare exceptions, it is always cheaper to buy the feed
and the training already in the horse. Breeding horses is a very
expensive hobby. If you don't get enjoyment out of breeding horses as a
hobby, don't do it.

There are lots of people who are willing to spend money on the hobby of
breeding horses (and there are lots of people who are dumb enough to
think that breeding horses will eventually be profit making so they lose
a bunch of money at it before they quit or go bankrupt) such that, at
least for now, nobody has to pay as much to buy a horse as it costs to
produce it...and that is true for no matter what age you acquire a
horse.

There is no reason to think that acquiring a horse at age zero (or more
accurately minus one year of age) is going to be profit making while
acquiring one after age zero is going to incur a loss.

For you breeders out there who are chagrined by the fact that you aren't
making money breeding horses and selling them, you can take consolation
from the fact that the person you are selling the horse to probably
isn't going to make any money on the horse either.
