RE: [RC] Spanish Mustangs/freedoms - heidiSorry -- Terminology ... I tend to think of a "backyard breeder" as someone who has no real concept of what they are trying to achieve with their breeding "program". They don't test for inherited diseases, and they don't evaluate their breeding herd or their progeny with regard to that vision -- whether that is by conformation, behavior, or performance records of the horses in the breeding herd, or the accomplishments of their progeny. To me, a BYB is a haphazard operation - there is no "program". A small breeding operation is not, to me, the same thing. It isn't the *size* of the operation, it is the *approach*. I do understand. I tend to respond about the term, though, because it has been bandied about so much by the "elite" in the Arab breed, meaning anybody who isn't a sycophant following a major show ring trainer. A long-term program is key--and sadly, most people (even the ones who have money and who buy nice fancy places and build pretty barns and get all the "right" info on "how to do it") who get "into breeding" are only "into" it for five years, and never DO put together a "program." The "five years and out" phenomenon is actually noted and cited by registry entities and others.
