"Fit to continue" was not instituted to try and pull more horses at the finish...it was put there to make people ride as if they had something to lose that last leg of the ride. I really appreciate a vet who makes sure he sees a sound step on every leg and turns away. I really have seen a horse trot sound out from the vet, step on himself and go lame *during the trot out*. That is not what you want to catch. I once had a vet watch my horse trot out after a 100, stare very intently, frowning, then ask me to do it again because they thought they *might* have seen something. If you didn't see it why would you try harder???? The darn horse just did 100 miles and stood here getting chilly waiting for you to have time to watch him trot and you're going to watch twice just to see if it's possible to pull us????? 4 good steps and announcing "that's good" AT THE FINISH is excellent protocol in my book.
