Re: [RC] Eventing deaths - Truman Prevatt

There is a big farm near Ocala where they used to have large eventing competitions. They had the Olympic trails for the '88 Olympics there. We went to watch. We had stayed there in the past with our horses to ride in the ONF and one day we went out and rode around on the eventing course. All I can say awesome. Those jumps don't move. This is not a sport for sissies.

One horse took off too close to a jump, caught his front feet on the jump and flipped over backwards landing square on top of his rider. The horse got up and trotted off. The rider never got up - dead on impact. One of the people we were with explained that the horse was really too close to the jump and that was because the rider made a mistake in pacing between jumps. She went on to say the rider should have never attempted that jump since there will little way the horse was going to have room to get high enough to clear it. But I guess it was the Olympic if she ran out of the jump she wouldn't have gone. She didn't go anyway.

On the other hand we've been running about 11 reported deaths in 22,000 starts (with if memory serves me about 3 deaths in a little less than 1000 starts in 100's) the past few years in the AERC. I wonder how many horse deaths the eventing world is running in how many starts.

Truman
