That is the bottom line. If there is a way to get into trouble a horse will find it.
I've now got panels, but I know they won't stop my horse if
he's freaked out enough and decides he needs to get away. I sleep with one ear open and clothed so that I don't
offend neighbors should I have to make a hasty exit from my
trailer and rescue my boy or someone else's wayward equine!
Come down to the SE - we won't care if you are buck nekkid when you go out to fetch your horse. In fact you might get more help that way :-P ! (Howard sent me that comment).

In reality there is no fool proof method. The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is training at home. We expect horses to behave in the vet line, not kick poor Susan at PS rides and at SE rides Otis will kick them back. We expect them to behave in a crowd at watering holes. We expect them not to tail gate. However, no one has mentioned them being trained to camp - independent of how they are secured. If they are going to be kept in an electric pen - the first time to try it is NOT at a ride. If they are going to be high tied - well don't throw that sucker on the trailer right before you leave for a ride and work out the kinks there.

Training to camp well is just as important as any other part or training for an endurance ride. My horses are always trained to camp long before they ever see an endurance ride.
