[RC] Rumps Rugs - Normanjudyv

What is the purpose of a rump rug while riding on the trail??? What I have seen is a large piece of material flapping up & down or hanging off to one side. Is it suppose to be keeping the horse warm??? I always thought it is best for the horse to be shedding heat, maybe not, just asking??? I don,t want to buy one. jvm
