[RC] One last comment about the shot cat from a pigeon fancier's wife - Beth Leggieri

The possible other side of the story:

It is important to note that pigeon raising can be a lifelong devotion with as much passion and money invested as those of us with horses, sometimes even more (money).  It is not uncommon for a breeder to have paid more than $1,000 for a mated pair.  It is also not uncommon for much more to have been paid for imported stock, well over $10,000 for a bird with an established race or show record that was purchased to upgrade the existing stock.  Predators of any variety can wreak havoc on a carefully planned breeding program or if the pigeon fancier is racing homing pigeons, the hoped-for futurity prize can be $10,000-25,000 or more or a new truck or any number of prizes.  If a predator should kill the birds-in-training, not only is the investment lost but also the hope for the futurity prize.

So sometimes those backyard lofts can be deceiving as much more can be going on behind the scenes.  For a pigeon fancier it's not "just a bird," and the fancier cannot afford for predators of any species to eradicate his investment.
