Re: [RC] Tatar/Mongolian/Cossack bridle - Barbara McCrary

Lynn, My husband and I went to Mongolia this last August and went to a museum while there. I found that Mongols have been using the same snaffle since ancient times. Very interesting...
I bought a bridle from a vendor while there; I paid $40 for headstall and bit (brass.) Unfortunately for you, I have no intention of letting it go. It's my treasure! I might be able to contact someone in Mongolia who could arrange to get you a bridle. No promises, but I could try. There is an artist who is trying to sell some of his paintings through us, and we're not really interested in doing this. But, since we have his e-mail address, and since he understands English well enough, I might be able to go through him and get a bridle. Also, our tour guide was a young Mongol who speaks and understands English. Maybe he can locate a bridle for you. I'll keep you posted. Keep in touch with me, please.

Barbara

Subject: [RC] Tatar/Mongolian/Cossack bridle

Hi all,

I've been reading a book on Cossack history. Cossacks
rode in a Tatar style bridle. If you ever see
pictures of the goat pulling game in Central Asia or
general pictures of Mongolian horses they use this
style of bridle. What makes it different is that the
nose band is attached directly to the headstall so it
acts kind of like a combination bit. I have yet to
see a picture of a Mongolian/Tatar/Cossack horse in
anything other than one of these bridles. All they
ever use is a simple snaffle bit with this bridle
(sometimes with a tiedown). Does anyone know where I
can get one or how I can fit/make one to a horse?
From what I have read these bridles are just tied
raw-hide with no buckles. Anyway, I currently use a
Kineton noseband to control my mare on the first loops
of races. I really like this because I don't have to
go to a really severe bit and I can just take if off
after the first loop. The thing I don't like about
the Kineton noesband is that it's like one of those
chain puzzles...can be frustrating if I am in a hurry.
Anyway, if anyone could help me with this you can
e-mail me privately.

Merry Christmas everyone!

-Lynn
