This sounds very much like something a "Dressage Queen" (DQ) would say.
To me, this would be a sign that the person has stopped being an
endurance rider and has become an EQ instead.

Real endurance riders don't care about the color of their tack and don't
replace it until it has become non-functional...and often, not even
then, if it can be "fixed" with some baling twine.
