RE: [RC] [RC] Long distance hauling - Katrina Mosshammer

I think being able to travel loose also makes a huge difference. Our trailer
has no dividers, it is just an 8 ft box stall and we haul loose. We'll
usually let them out once on a 6 hour trip. However we do stop for gas quite
frequently so they get a bit of a break from the movement. We have so much
happier horses in this trailer where they can move around. They have hay
bags and we offer water every 3 hrs our so as well. We can haul 3 horses in
there pretty comfortably, but this year we have usually only had two. Works
for us.

I normally stop when I need gas. I have a 50 gal. tank. The horse gets a
break, I offer water, check food and make sure everything is O.K.
Only on trips over 5 hours do I get them out of the trailer to stretch their
legs. If I travel with one horse I keep the divider open and essentially
make a box stall and leave them loose so that they can turn around and move
around a bit. If that's the case, I will usually only let them out once that
day. Last trip was 11 hours and horse came out once during that time. I will
stop extra if it is hot so I can offer water more frequently. My horses
travel great and eat, drink and pee fine. It would take me forever if I
stopped every two hours for 15 minutes and my travel time would be too long.
I think it's best to get where your going and then they can relax. Works for
me...just my opinion,

Lauren
