[RC] How do you train to make a great multi-day horse?? - Kimberly Huck

Hi everyone,

I need your advice please.  I’d like to hear from those of you who are multi-day ride experts. J

I have a horse that I would like to make a great multi-day horse out of.  This would be his first season of 4 multi day rides.  I think he has the potential for it but I’m just not sure how much training to do to get prepared for the multi day rides and I’m not sure how much to do in between.  How do you prepare and what do you do in between rides in terms of training?  How much time do you tend to give off for rest?   The multi-day rides that I would like to attend here in the Southeast this year are:

Dec 29 thru Jan 1          30/20/30 (this one is a technical trail with some deep sand)

Jan 10th -                     25/25 (or could be a 25/50 or 50/25 or 50/50) This is flat with sandy forest roads.

Feb 8th                          25/25 (or could be a 25/50 or 50/25 or 50/50)

March 13th                    40/40/20 (this one has quite a bit of deep sand)

There is availability of other one day rides before and in between the dates given.  The horse just turned 8 and has 300 AERC miles on him. He has been brought along slowly and has done one multi-day ride (25/25) in 2006 where he top tenned both days.  He just did a 27 mile CTR this past weekend and came in 2nd in his weight division.

Thanks so much.

Kim
