If a horse still recovers well at a 12 mile vet check for example but seems to start slowing up around mile 20 would there be any benefit to making sure the vet check is far enough along in the ride to help determine if a horse is ok to continue?  Or maybe add a 'mini' vet check (not necessarilly by a vet but by a volunteer who KNOWS the sport) farther along or every so many miles? 
The horse in question that had to go on IV's at the end of the ride, what was he looking like at the vet check?
