Re: [RC] Reducing the waistline - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

I hope that my experience is as good as yours with my 8 year old. Seven had
not been abused to your knowledge?

It's such a crap shoot. No way you can know, you just roll the dice and hope.
So far as I know, 7 was raised in a herd of mares & foals, practically like a
feral herd. There was actually a stallion running with the mare herd when I saw
them. It was a 50 acre field by the Tennessee River. Factories surrounding it
kinda messed up the whole "wild herd" mentality but I think it was a pretty
"natural" family situation.

When the stallions got too old they led them about a mile or 2 down the road to
the "stallion field" where there were 3 stallions in a bachelor herd together
on 30 acres when I bought him. The old man who had bred him used to go down
there and sit in a lawn chair to "visit" them. The last year or so a woman who
knew almost nothing about horses spent a lot of time just "visiting" with them
too. She had no clue how to be careful but the stallions just acted like
geldings. Not even nippy. That's all the handling I know of that he ever had. I
can't help but think most of his manners were taught by the herd. He absolutely
does not threaten to kick and was the easiest introduction into my herd I've
seen. Seems to have very good herd manners. He seems to have no fear of
anything. He thinks everything is there to bring him food or be a friend. I was
dragging a tarp that was flapping and making a loud noise and where most would
have looked alarmed his ears are up like, "Wow, wonder what *that* is going to
taste like!"

There's still plenty that can go wrong. May have lameness problems. Who knows.
You just wait and hope. There's no sure things.

Angie
