Re: [RC] Feeding before a ride - Beth WalkerSo - what about multi-days? Does / should the feeding strategy change? Mostly, I've just tried to keep my regimen the same, regardless of whether I'm at home, at a 1-day or multi-day ride (and for the record - I've only ever been at one multi-day, so I don't have a lot of experience here, so I'm asking). My guy is used to getting something in the morning besides hay, so I don't change that just for a ride, whether or not he can actually "use" it at a ride. The amount or exactly what is in it might change, but I don't think my horse notices that. He *does* notice if somebody forgot to feed him his extras ( I board, and I was told that he actually pulled his head out of the feeder and gave a "hey you!" snort to the ranch owner as she was getting ready to move on down the isle - she had forgotten his morning supplements ). It has helped to provide some good insight and understanding in the feeding process in general. On my last training ride, my ride partner commented, after we got back to the trailer, and my mare pooped. "My God, I can't believe that mare still has any left in her after all that she left out there on the trail!" I doubt that she eliminated 150 pounds worth but how would I know. What it does tell me she barely wanted to eat. Even after finishing 10 miles. So, as I work her miles up it will be interesting to see at what mileage she decides to dive into the food. :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
