Re: [RC] [RC] Any Other Runners Out Here? - Mike Lewis

Hey there, Dawn.

The biggest difference is that I'm starting to move into riding on terrain whereas before I rode the flat races in FL and GA.  Biltmore left me hurting for a few days.  Previously, I'd been riding an old gelding who was really rough--so obviously was sore due to his poor conformation and related rideability issues (he made friends of mine who raced him in endurance races sick to their stomachs he was so rough.)

I think getting off and running parts of each race will help (obviously wouldn't do this till the pack had well thinned out), and some additional post-ride stretching may help.  Going to try Absorbine on ME after the next endurance race, too.

I tend to stay away form NSAIDS where possible, but they surely do help when needed.  My typical week of running is 35-40 miles including speed work and a 10-mile tempo run, and I run Monday-Friday so as not to lose out on mileage due to horse races on the weekends.  :-)

Thank you,

Mike

My husband (who is 42) is a runner (he runs half marathons) and also does endurance (currently doing 50s, wants to move up to 100s).  He isn't sore or tight after riding 50s.  He doesn't take any supplements, and admits that he doesn't do much stretching before running...just one stretch to loosen up a bit.  Are you riding faster at endurance rides than during conditioning, or perhaps doing more cantering, or something different at rides than during your conditioning rides?

Won my second race (ever) last week... a 5-k... with a time of 16:20.  Trying to break into the low 15s before all is said and done, though I'm not a 20-something anymore.

I'm having a problem with leg fatigue caused by training for and competing in endurance horseback races.  I tend to be tight and sore for about 2 weeks after a horseback race, which really puts the stoppers on running to the best of my ability.  Hoping someone else here will have the same experience and will be able to recommend a stretching routine, or massage, etc. that helps restore their own running ability in the days following a horseback race.  Can the two sports be successfully balanced?  :-)

Thanks,

Mike Lewis
