Re: [RC] Trotting Styles of Horses - Laney Humphrey

I've always looked for efficient movement assuming that efficiency means less wasted energy. The up and down "sewing machine" type of trot seems to me to be more suited to the show ring because there is so much up and down but not so much forward motion. I used to think the "daisy clipper" types movement - very little knee action - was best, but I've decided those horses often are trippers. Now I look for just enough knee action to make sure the hooves land square but not enough to waste energy.

I'm looking for my next endurance horse and have come upon the option of different trotting styles of horses.

One has a "sewing machine" type of trot...vertical action...and is said to be a smooth ride...slow walker

The other has more of what's considered a typical Arab trot with more extension to the stride and is also said to be smooth.

Can anyone can give me pros and cons to either or both...although ultimately I understand it's a matter of what one gets used to.

Thanks!
Val
