Re: [RC] [RC] The same could be said of Tevis (was: suicide race) - Karen SullivanKat and all, here is my opinion.......to NOT speak up about abuse or inhumane treatment becaue you feel it may possibly compromise your own adjenda or sport can be self-serving and cowardly. Yes, we have to be concerned about the lunatic fringe PETA folks who would like to see all the doggies, kitties and horsies turned loose..but that doesn't mean we turn a blind eye on other horse sports that are NOT run with adequate rules, or veterinary supervision. I applaud those courageous folks who step forward; contact the Humane Society, local Animal Control or whatever to step up for those animals that have no voice in this..... As far as Tevis.....my opinion is that there is an extremely high percentage of superb horsemen riding who negotiage that ride with skill and compassion for their horse. Having crewed at Tevis a few times, and watched at vet checks and the end; I still see horses that just look exhausted afterward; still look too thin and run down to even start the ride....and know of a few that had no business being out there. JMHO since i have never ridden Tevis..... In the former years I was doing a lot of LD rides with my kids, and a few 50's; I saw at least one really bad example at each ride of people over-riding horses, abusive treatment, poor sportmanship. My own shame for not protesting to ride managers.....
