Re: [RC] falling off the horse-long - Diane Trefethen

Hi Elysa,

1., how long before I can ride again (my other, non-spooky horse)?
Do I just wait til it stops hurting too much?

This depends on several variables and probably the degree of your injury is not the highest on the list. First, how well do you, as an individual heal? Some people knit quickly; others don't. A body that heals itself efficiently will be ready for action sooner than one that mends slowly. Second, is luck. If you get a cold or allergies, every cough and/or sneeze can disrupt the mending of those broken ribs. Third, your attitude. If you piss and moan and stay in the dumps, psychologically, you will mend more slowly. It is almost as though the body is saying to the brain, "I'm not gonna do squat until you stop beating us both down!" All that said, you might be able to climb into the saddle again in as little as 9 wks or it might take 6 mos. I got dumped last April and was able to ride in just over 9 wks.

2., anyone have any suggestions other than a velcro-butt graft?

From your description of yourself, I got am image of Humpty Dumpty on horseback. Overweight or not, Splendor being wonderful or not, I'd look for another horse that is pony-sized. I never owned an Icelandic but I believe they are tough, steady, smart and most importantly, closer to the ground. Another factor is kindness. A truly kind horse will not "forget" itself and do something dangerous to you. As someone else said, yes, there are the REALLY unexpected, king-sized scarys but except for them, a care-taker will do just that. Your build combined with being overweight are just too much to overcome with a horse that is not a real care-taker.

Good luck in your riding :)
