Re: [RC] [RC] Best Sound Magnifying Stethescope? - Crysta Turnage

I got tired of fiddling with all the high tech gadgets that only worked 1/2 the time and started just using my hand during rides too.  My guy has a LOUD heart and his pulse is really easy to just feel with my hand next to his girth.  It's great, works fast and I don't have to worry about packing anything extra along.  I've found I can take his pulse by feel in a lot less time and even while he's maybe wiggling around.  I will still listen with my steth after occassional training rides to actually "hear" the beat, the quality, the sound, etc to monitor for any changes every now and then.  Plus a steth is helpful to have around for gut sounds too, although I've been seen with my ear pressed against his side as well.  =)

OK this peaked my curiosity. I've been competing since I was 8. Back then we
rarely used steths at home and while training. I was always taught to check
a pulse with my hand. I've gotten so used to doing it that way that I
absolutely hate using a steth. They always pinch my ears and I hear more
rustling than I do a heartbeat.  LOL  (That's why I always volunteer for
timing, vet sec., spotting, go-fer, anything but PR :-P )

So I was just curious, does anybody still check HR with just your hand
anymore? (just speaking in terms of for yourself personally, not for
official purposes during a ride of course) Also to all the newbies out
there, do they still teach newbies how to check that way? It comes in handy
sometimes, i.e. batteries on HRM die, steth breaks, etc.  I can also check
my mare while sitting on her back when we stop for a bite to eat or drink.
Anyway, just wondering how antiquated I am. ;-)
