The statement:

a difference!"

brings back shades of the 60's and early 70's to the classic "Love it or Leave it" in referring to the Vietnam war protest. Not only a pretty narrow view but also fairly non-productive.

Hardly. The operative word is "berate." Meaning "to scold or condemn vehemently and at length."

You can disagree, you can challenge, you can question, you can propose alternatives, all without condemning those with whom you disagree. "Flaming" and berating are non-productive, because instead of promoting change or thoughtful consideration, they cause people to get defensive and harden their positions.

For example, I am convinced that Jim has hurt his cause and harmed his credibility on the issue he feels so passionate about, by his attack mode.
